Genie Torsion Spring Replacement: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Most Genie torsion spring replacements in Houston run between $180 and $340 installed, and we stock Genie-compatible springs on our trucks for same-day service in most neighborhoods. You’ll know yours has failed the moment you hear it: a loud bang from the garage that sounds like a firework went off inside the wall, followed by a door that refuses to lift more than a few inches. Genie pairs torsion springs with their door systems in specific wire sizes and lengths, so matching the replacement to your exact model matters more than most owners expect. Call (361) 286-8321 and we’ll walk through what’s on your door and get a technician out to you.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie torsion springs are found on their sectional garage door lines, including the IntelliCore, ReliaG, and TriloG series, as well as doors installed with Genie-branded track hardware. The spring itself doesn’t carry a Genie part stamp in most cases. Instead, you’ll find a color code painted on one end of the spring – that color tells us the wire gauge, inside diameter, and coil count, which have to match your door’s weight and height exactly. Genie’s residential doors in Houston are commonly paired with 1-3/4″ or 2″ inside-diameter springs, but that’s not uniform across their catalog, which is why we measure lift cable length, drum position, and panel weight before ordering or pulling a spring from the truck.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with Genie. We install torsion springs from manufacturers that meet or exceed the spec Genie ships with, and we’ll tell you exactly which spring we’re using and why. For most Genie doors under 10 years old, an aftermarket spring at the same spec works as well and lets us keep the total price lower. Fernbrook’s techs also service LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, so if your Genie door has a non-Genie opener mounted to it, we can handle that in the same visit.

Signs Your Genie Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

  • Visible gap in the coil. A torsion spring under tension has solid, continuous coils. If you see a 1/4-inch or wider separation, that spring has already snapped or stretched beyond safe load and needs replacement before the door gets moved again.
  • Door drops fast when closing. The spring does the heavy lifting, not the opener. When it’s fading, the door’s true weight starts making itself known, and the last two feet of travel sound like a controlled crash.
  • Opener strain and grinding. If your Genie opener sounds like it’s working harder than it used to, the spring may have lost enough tension that the motor is now carrying the full load, which shortens opener life.
  • Cable slack on one side. Lift cables should stay tight against the drums. Loose or crossed cables on a Genie door tell us the torsion spring has stopped evenly distributing tension.
  • Rust blooms along the coil. Houston humidity works on garage door springs all year, but it’s worst in late summer. Surface rust alone isn’t a failure, but flaking or pitted rust on a spring that’s been in service for 8-plus years means the metal is thinning and should be replaced on your schedule, not its own.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, a Genie torsion spring replacement runs $180 to $340 installed, and the price is written down before any work starts. The spread depends on spring size (heavier double-car doors need larger diameter and longer coils), whether one or both springs are replaced, and whether your Genie door needs new center bearing plates or cable drums at the same time. The line-item price we hand you covers the springs, the labor, lubrication of all moving parts, and a final balance check on the door. Most jobs also include replacing the lift cables if they show wear, since that’s the moment when cables are easiest to swap and cheapest to do. Jesse Calder has the crew trained to explain the exact spring spec going on your door and why, before the first tool leaves the truck.

DIY or Call Us?

Torsion springs store an enormous amount of energy, even when the door is closed. If one lets go during a DIY attempt, the result can be a broken hand, a broken jaw, or worse. We don’t give step-by-step instructions for removing or winding torsion springs – nobody with a conscience does. What an owner can safely do: look at the spring to confirm a gap in the coil, take a photo of the color code to text to us, and test the door by lifting manually with the opener disengaged. That tells you and us a lot. Replacing the spring itself is a technician job, and most of our Houston spring swaps take about 60 to 90 minutes. Call (361) 286-8321 and we’ll quote your spring over the phone after a few questions.
