Craftsman Garage Door Installation in Houston: What to Know First

Craftsman garage door installation in Houston typically runs $700 to $2,200, and our independent Craftsman service team can usually complete a standard door replacement in one day if the parts are in stock locally. That price is written down and handed to you before any work begins, so there is no second invoice at the end of the day. If you own a Craftsman door that needs to be replaced or a Craftsman opener that needs a new door to match, call (361) 286-8321 and a live person will answer, day or night.

This page is for Houston homeowners with a Craftsman garage door, usually on homes built between the late 1990s and the mid-2010s when Sears sold a lot of Craftsman openers and door packages. We will cover what fails on these doors, what it costs to install a new one, how our crew handles a Craftsman job, and the questions owners ask most. If you already know the door is shot and you want a price, call us. The estimate is free, and we will come out wearing shoe covers, not slogans.

How Craftsman Products Fail, and How We Fix Them

Jesse Calder has pulled enough Craftsman doors apart in Houston to recognize the patterns. Most Craftsman garage doors sold through Sears during the 2000s and early 2010s were solid, middle-weight steel doors with either Wayne Dalton or Clopay hardware under the Craftsman label, depending on the year and region. The door itself is rarely the weak point, but the hardware and the installation around it often is, especially after a decade of Houston humidity and heat cycles. Here are the five failure modes we see most often on Craftsman installs in this city:

  • Classic Collection and 6600 series: rust at the bottom brackets. These doors used steel brackets at the bottom corners, and in a Houston garage that floods a few inches every few years or just holds humidity through the summer, those brackets corrode where the bottom roller attaches. The door eventually shifts, the cable wears against the track, and the door rides crooked. On a new install, we use corrosion-resistant brackets and check the concrete slope before we mount anything.
  • Torquemaster spring systems on older opener-down packages. A number of Craftsman doors sold through Sears in the Houston area came with the Torquemaster enclosed spring tube rather than a standard torsion spring. Those tubes sacrifice a few years of life to rust and internal wear, and several Houston garages we visit have one that is dry-firing or slipping. When we install a new Craftsman door we replace that tube with a standard torsion spring setup. It is easier to service, easier to balance, and honest about wear over time.
  • Nylon rollers on the 3300 series that flatten in heat. Houston garages hit 110 degrees inside in July, and the nylon rollers on some Craftsman doors develop flat spots over repeated heat exposure. The door starts to thump each time it reaches those flat spots, and the extra vibration walks the opener arm loose. New doors from us go up with heavier-duty nylon rollers rated for continuous heat, which makes the door quieter and keeps the tracks from getting hammered.
  • Panel delamination on steel doors with particleboard core. Some Craftsman doors from the mid-2000s used a thin steel skin over a particleboard-style core. When a Houston downpour comes sideways against the door face and the paint has any pinhole, the core soaks water and swells, and the panel delaminates. That is a replacement, not a patch job. We quote the new panel or the full door, and we tell you the difference before you spend a dollar.
  • Opener mounting brackets pulling off header wood. This is less about the door and more about the way many Craftsman packages were installed originally. The opener head bolts to a 2×4 strip across the header, and in humid Houston summers that wood softens over two decades. The opener sags, the door starts to jerk, and the install fails from the top down. Our crew re-anchors the opener to solid framing as part of a proper install, and we actually check that the header has something solid to bite into.

Our Craftsman Garage Door Installation Process

When a Craftsman door needs full replacement or a new installation in Houston, we run the same careful sequence every time, whether it is a single car door in the Heights or a double door near the Energy Corridor. Jesse will not quote over the phone blind. He sends a technician out to measure, look at the tracks and the header, and then put the written price in your hand.

  1. 1
Measure and inspect the existing opening. Craftsman doors are older, and the original opening may not be square anymore. We measure the opening, the side clearance, the headroom, and the condition of the header wood.
  2. 2
Decide repair or replace, then quote. If a panel or hardware replacement makes sense, we say so. If the door is at the end of its life, we quote the full installation, with the price written before any work begins.
  3. 3
Order or confirm parts. We source Craftsman-compatible door sections and hardware from local Houston distributors, and we consider OEM versus quality aftermarket parts case by case. We do not use parts that void the warranty on the new door.
  4. 4
Install the door and hardware. Door panel by panel, track by track, spring by spring. Shoe covers on floors, drop cloths under the work area, and quiet tools if the kids or the dog are inside.
  5. 5
Balance, test, and photograph the cleanup. The door gets balanced by hand, then cycled with the opener several times. We take a photo of the finished work and the cleaned area before we leave, and we go over the 365-Day Done Right Promise with you.
  6. 6
Write down what we did and what it cost. Every visit ends with a written summary of work and cost. No surprise line items. No invoice that looks different from the quote.

What Craftsman Garage Door Installation Costs in Houston

Here are the numbers we tell Houston homeowners when they ask what a Craftsman garage door installation should cost. These are real ranges from our own jobs in the Houston market, not a national estimator table.

  • New single-car door installation: $700 to $1,400
  • New double-car door installation: $1,400 to $2,200
  • Panel replacement on a Craftsman door: $250 to $500
  • Track realignment or replacement: $120 to $240
  • Roller replacement: $110 to $220
  • Opener installation (Craftsman or compatible): $250 to $550
  • Torsion spring replacement: $180 to $340

What moves the price on a Craftsman job is mostly the door size, the panel material (steel versus wood), whether the tracks and hardware are salvageable, and how much trim or framing needs to be redone after the old door comes off. Houston rot on the bottom seal channel or the trim boards often gets discovered once the old door is out, and we quote that honestly before we touch it. Call (361) 286-8321 for a free estimate. The number we write down is the number you pay.
